“We can just fill up the bed and sort them later,” Jake replied as he slid gracefully out of the passenger seat.

After about an hour of picking, we had a sizable stack in the bed and the trees looked nearly empty. I took a break to survey the rest of the orchard. I had estimated somewhere around two dozen when we first looked; it was exactly 24, divided evenly between cherries, peaches, apples, pears and plums. Cherries were done for the year, but the pears looked almost ripe and apples and plums would come closer to fall. I was touched again by the sheer luck—or was it help from up above?—of finding so many productive trees still in the orchard.
